Industrial Laser Welding
for Plastics & Metal
The laser offers ideal joining technologies for metallic materials. The advantages are clear: clean, narrow seams, a small heat-affected zone (HAZ) and maximum flexibility. Every application brings its own challenges – drawing on our broad portfolio of laser welding systems, we take an objective approach and engineer the most innovative and effective solution for our customers.
Processes
Heat Conduction and Keyhole Welding
Visually excellent, virtually ripple-free weld seams with the typical geometry that is wider at the top. Stainless steel components show a microstructure free of oxides and temper colours – achieved through precisely adapted shielding gas coverage with individual nozzle geometries and economical gas flow parameters.
Much higher laser intensities open the so-called keyhole in the metal through plasma formation, allowing the laser radiation to penetrate to a very great depth. The result is very narrow I-seams with minimal heat input into the components. This makes it possible to weld right through thick materials.
The intelligent use of process monitoring tools ensures that welding processes are ready for volume production. All weld seam dimensions – both on the surface and in depth – can be measured in-process during welding. Penetration depths can be measured optically in real time and kept consistently within specification.

About the Process
The Benefits of Laser Welding
Laser welding metallic materials produces strong, metallurgically bonded joints while keeping heat input into the components to a minimum. The resulting weld seams are free of pores and spatter – or keep them to a minimum – and form ideal microstructures and intermetallic phases.
Minimal heat-affected zone, maximum seam quality – monitored for volume production.
Ideal microstructures and intermetallic phases through precise parameter control.
Minimal heat-affected zone in keyhole welding – no distortion of components.
Clean seams without temper colours thanks to adapted shielding gas coverage.
Precisely controlled energy input protects temperature-sensitive areas of the component.
Ideal shielding gas coverage for every component geometry.
For many component types, welding through to the inner side must be prevented – process monitoring ensures this.
Weld seam dimensions on the surface and in depth can be captured in real time.
Consistent penetration depths can be measured in-process and maintained over the long term.
Intelligent process monitoring tools ensure consistent quality across the entire production run.
